Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny. -- Upanishads

      Stop and Smell the roses

It has been a few times now. When I take my dog out for a walk, he would always make numerous stops and sniff around. Often I go ahead of him and I would say "Gio, come on! Let's go!" One day I realized that he is always slower than me when we walk because he has been taking his time to smell the flowers, or grass or trees on his way. Then I think to myself, "What's the rush?" Sometimes, I know what my rushes were. I need to go to places at a certain time. (For example, going to teach a class) As human beings, we have commitments that we need to stick with. Sometimes, or maybe most of the time, we pack our schedules so tight, we have to run from places to places with no stops in between. But what if we all take a break once in a while and slow down to enjoy what we have at the moment? Dogs do that, because they dont really care about being late or on time. They dont have a schedule except when it comes to feeding time and walkie times. They would whine or do whatever they need to do to catch your attention, so you wont forget to feed them or take them out. (You would know if you have a dog (or two) or if you have a baby)
Other than that, they do not really have a day to day life schedule to stick to. They can do whatever, whenever, wherever, however.
So many interesting things in life we may have missed or not even be aware during our day to day function because we just keep going to make a living. So many little details and things we could learn from our pets and kids that we probably should start pay more attention to.
We can start by stopping in front of your house, apartment building or wherever you are, look around, noticing faces passing by, decorations on the wall, weeds that have been growing between concrete tile cracks, and appreciating what a beautiful world we are living in, and also what has been presented in front of you.
